Two important community events take place on Marco Island this Memorial Day, Monday May 30th.
At 10 AM join the City of Marco Island to dedicate the Herbert R. Savage Bridge (formerly known as the Smokehouse Bay Bridge). Herb Savage, as one of the original architects working with the Mackle brothers, helped develop the vision of Marco Island. He is also a veteran, having spent more than 20 years with the military, both in active service and in the reserves. The bridge dedication ceremony will take place in the parking lot of the Marco Lutheran Church atthe west end of the bridge on North Collier Boulevard.
Following the dedication, at 11 AM the annual Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at Veterans Community Park. Join Marco Island’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6370 to honor and remember those who died in active military service. The ceremony includes music by the Marco Strummers, as well as local musicians and students. Veterans from all branches of service will be present, along with members of the Marco Island Fire-Rescue and Police Departments.
Islanders should bring their own chairs. The forecast is characteristically hot, and hats, sunglasses and umbrellas for shade are also suggested.
