Meet Your Area Dolphins

The Research Team on board the Dolphin Explorer is happy to share information about your area dolphins with the Coastal Breeze News readers. Each edition an individual will be profiled so that you, too, might get to know them. Dolphins can be identified by the nicks and marks on their dorsal fins.

Meet Hatchet

This big male is usually seen anywhere from the Jolley Bridge up to the Isles of Capri.

He is part of a “male pair bond,” seen very often with another big male named Capri. It’s not unusual for two males to form this type of bond in order to impress females with their pair-bond behavior and can cooperatively “herd” one or more females into mating situations.

Hatchet is quite a jumper as well, and has been seen leaping as high as seven to eight feet out of the water. His dorsal fin marks are quite distinct.
