Out of the 275 American Cancer Society Relay For Life events held in the State of Florida this year, Relay For Life of Marco Island came in first in fundraising by bringing in an impressive $345,000. The funds will be used for general research and programs and services with the American Cancer Society.
Marco Island’s Relay team numbers remained constant; Last year and this year 26 teams participated. Yet this year’s event brought in almost $32,000 more than the $313,000 raised in 2016. So, how did they do it?Sue Olszak, Senior Development Manager, Distinguished Events, attributes this year’s success to the many third party events that were organized. Throughout the year, the 26 Relay For Life teams held fundraisers like Karaoke parties, golf tournaments, fashion shows, home tours, bake sales and more. On the day of Relay, a community barbeque was held, with the teams preparing various snacks and refreshments for sale.
Sue Olszak was very appreciative for the wonderful community support. “Our Relay couldn’t be as successful without the dedicated committee, volunteers, sponsors, donors, survivors and caregivers. It takes a village and in this case it took a community to raise funds to help end this dreaded disease.”
The ACS office thanked presenting sponsor, Robert J. Flugger, and sponsors JW Marriott Marco Island, Vitas Healthcare, and Truly Nolen.
The top ten teams are JW Marriott Marco Island/Members Club at Marco, Hideaway Chips Away at Cancer, Shoot Down Kids Cancer, Fight Like a Girl, Marco Island Women’s Club, Team Marva, New Life Community Church & Keller Williams, Marriott Crystal Shores, City of Hope and Flamingos.
Next year’s Relay For Life is scheduled for April 7, 2018 at Veterans Community Park from 3-9 PM. The kickoff will be held in November at the JW Marriott Marco Island. This community event, planned as a big celebration, is open to the public.
Other American Cancer Society fundraisers include the Imagination Ball on February 10, 2018 at the JW Marriott Marco Island.
