It’s called the “Imagination Ball”. Here’s why. The Marco Island Chapter of the American Cancer Society set the theme to imagine a world without cancer. The Ball, Marco Island’s most annual productive annual fund-raiser, brings islanders together to help contribute to curing one of the world’s most dreaded diseases. For many years the Marco Island Chapter has raised significant sums of money at the Ball. According to co-chairs Debra and Dick Shanahan, this year’s target is $100,000. They say, “We know it’s an ambitious goal, but we are confident that notably charitable Marco Islanders will go all out to get there. We can’t imagine a better cause.”
This year’s Ball will be held at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort on February 23rd at 6:00PM. The themeis a Venetian-style masquerade. It’s a wonderful opportunity to combine helping a vital cause while enjoying an evening of good food, good companionship and good entertainment. The Stacey Allison Band will provide the music, and outstanding prizes will be offered at auction, including cruise packages, a stay at a stunning home in North Carolina, accommodations at Five Star hotels in New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and other fabulous destinations, theme and adventure packages ranging from Seaworld, Aquatica and Legoland to Marco Island Watersports and Warbird flights. Of course there will be golf packages at local courses with instruction thrown in.
Cancer took 42,000 lives of Floridians last year, and more than 117,500 new cases were diagnosed. The Marco Island Chapter provides over 3,000 transportation services, and a host of programs designed to help dealing with long-term needs to dietician advice and counsel, to“R.O.C.K.” programs to give youngsters an opportunity to learn how to cope, spend time at camp and have a chance at a college scholarship. All programs are free because of the support from events such as the Imagination Ball.
Debra Shanahan summed it up: “The Cancer Ball is one of the most important to Islanders. Very few of us haven’t been affected by the loss of loved family members and friends from cancer. The Imagination Ball is our way of contributing to remembering those we lost and preventing future losses. We’re looking forward to an evening of fun and excitement as we continue the heroic fight. The Marco Island Chapter of the American Cancer Society is a tremendous asset to our community. It’s essential to support their endeavors.”
