Marco’s Bald Eagles Stand Tall
Early in the morning on September 26, local photographer Frank Steiger captured this riveting image of Marco Island’s proud bald eagles. The photograph was taken at the Marco Island Nature Preserve and Bird Sanctuary on Tigertail Court. Many people had feared that Hurricane Irma’s strong winds would cause injury or permanently chase the bald eagles away. Thankfully, they appear unharmed, and have returned to their home on Marco Island.
Editor’s Note: Other wildlife on Marco Island, such as the turtles, did not fare as well as the bald eagles. All the remaining 18 nest sites were destroyed and on Sand Dollar Island all stakes are missing. However, it has still been a good year, with 121 nests, 90 of which hatched before Irma.
