Marco Men Box for Charity

by Natalie Strom

Get ready for a night on the town filled with sucker punches, knock-outs, jabs, upper cuts and more. On Friday, November 1, the Marco Island Marriott will host an international live boxing event in the name of charity.

As Promoter Richie Stoltenborg of Marco Island explains, the night will feature two hand-picked teams – one from New Jersey and one from Ireland. For almost 20 years Richie has trained under privileged kids from the streets of New Jersey, his home state,  through his non-profit, the Dover Boxing Club. Aimed at keeping kids in school and off drugs, the program mirrors that of the team from Ireland. Last year, the two teams met up in Ireland for the same fight, and now they meet on Marco. Not only will the night benefit both boxing clubs, but it will also raise money to go to the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Twelve bouts will take place overall, eleven of which will be fought by members of each club. The last round will feature two Marco Island locals, Rob Popoff and Jimmy Downey in the fight of their lives! Both great supporters of the Dover Boxing Club, Popoff and Downey have been training harder than Rocky Balboa, hoping for a knockout.

Don’t miss your chance to see these two duke it out!

Doors open at 5 PM and the opening ceremonies are scheduled for 6 PM with the first bout immediately following the opening ceremonies. There will be a DJ, bag pipes, ring girls, 50/50 raffle, tee shirts, beer, wine and food for purchase. Michael and Mary Jo O’Regan will perform the anthems. Self-Parking is free at the Marriott for this event. All tickets to the show are $20. The Marriott is offering a limited number of rooms at a special rate for this event.
