It’s undeniable that some retail goods and services cost more on Marco. However, aware of that nearly 5 years ago when they established Marco Island Mattress, Furniture & Design Store, the father-and-son team of Greg and Richard Sumer quickly introduced a low-price guarantee.
Instead of matching big box store and Internet prices on brands they carried, however, the Sumers decided to give local customers 110% of the difference.
The offer has been steadfast through the years, and that means that customers don’t have to drive off the island to Naples, Fort Myers or even Miami to sniff out supposed bargains, as Greg Sumer says.
The store has also expanded dramatically in the past few years, from relatively humble beginnings as purely a mattress store to a one–stop local shop for home goods.
“We can now go from the floor to the ceiling with bedding, furniture, custom cabinetry, lighting, window treatments and accessories such as art, rugs and some carpeting,” says Greg.
This is a result, he says, of doubling the showroom space and increasing the lines to 150 popular brand names.
They include Tommy Bahama, Lexington and Bassett (furniture) as well as mattresses by Serta, Beautyrest Black (the top-of-the-line bedding option with cooling foam and triple–braided springs), Spink & Co. and Dunlopillo.
Customer preferences so far have included Murphy Beds, motion furniture, sleep sofas and sectionals, while a newly introduced window treatment department carries styles and designs from five different companies.
“We’re now actually a furniture and design center,” says Richard.
The Sumers reacted quickly to the COVID-19 outbreak, installing virus-killing lamps that turn on automatically each evening for about an hour. Masks, of course, are required.
A side effect of the pandemic has been inventory shortages on the part of manufacturers, Greg says, but the company’s nearby warehouses have been stocked to capacity over the months. If able to be called a pandemic silver lining, demand for home goods has increased markedly.
“People take another look at their old sofas or worn-out recliners and go buy new ones,” Greg says.
Also, not forgetting Marco is a true island, the Sumers have basically geared the showroom to coastal and island design.
“This came from paying attention to our customers,” Richard says, “so we tailored our offers to their preferences.”
