Marco Island Writers, a networking group for writers, celebrated their first anniversary with a social at Quinn’s on the Beach at Marco Island’s Marriott Beach Resort Wednesday evening, June 13.
The group’s founder and outgoing chairwoman, Gwen DeCrow, thanked the 18 members and guests in attendance for making the group the success it is today.
“A year ago in June, two writers showed up at the first meeting I held in the Marco Island Library,” said DeCrow. “Today our membership is up to 60 people, with an average of 30 writers attending our monthly meetings during season. I can’t believe what this has turned into.”
DeCrow passed the baton of leadership to members Joanne Tailale and Krista Santora, who will serve as co-chairwomen for the 2012-13 season. DeCrow presented Tailele with a bouquet of purple flowers. The color purple, DeCrow explained, is symbolic of the leadership, dedication and enthusiasm Tailele has demonstrated to the group throughout the year. A yellow bouquet was given to Santora to represent her sunny disposition, energy and spirit of cooperation, DeCrow said.
The writers presented DeCrow with a gift, also, in appreciation for her vision and inspiration as the founder of the Marco Island Writers, bringing writers together to network and encourage each other as they strive to improve their writing abilities.
“Gwen will be a hard act to follow,” said Tailele. “She has done an incredible job leading the group and making it what it is today.”
Tailele and Santora are poised for the new season with speakers and writing workshops scheduled. And Kristine Wruk, the group’s webmaster, is creating the Marco Island Writers’ website to create a media presence for the group.
Marco Island Writers meet year round on the second Wednesday of each month at the Fifth Third Bank Community Room located at 650 E. Elkcam Circle. The door opens at 6:00 PM, and the meeting takes place from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. Writers of all levels are welcome to attend.
