Marco Island Supports Safe Boating

Perla stays safe on the water in her life jacket.

Forty Marco Island boaters and a handful of dogs wearing life jackets recently spent a Saturday morning at the Marco Island Yacht Club as part of the “Ready, Set, Wear IT!” event for safe boating.

Boaters are encouraged to wear a life jacket anytime they are on the water. Children need to wear a properly fitted life jacket whenever in a boat.

The Marco Island Police Department, Fire Rescue Department, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Conservancy were present with their rescue/enforcement boats. The Civil Air Patrol flew over several times to show their support for boating safety.

The event was organized by the Marco Island Commanders Group. Direct support was provided by the Marco Island Yacht Club, as the site host and the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron, managing the logistics.

To learn more about different types/styles of life jackets, visit www.SafeBoatingCouncil.org or write to National Safe Boating Council, 6985 Gateway Court, Manassas, VA 20109.

Basic safe boating to full navigational skills can be learned by attending classes provided by the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron. Visit www.MarcoIslandSailandPowerSquadron.org for the schedule of classes or call Tom Ryan at 908-432-8767 to register.
