According to a statement by Marco Island Police Captain David S. Baer, on July 11th, 2016, the Marco Island Police Department (MIPD) received a telephone call from a resident of Tennessee advising that fraudulent charges were made on one of her credit cards at the Marco Island Marriot Resort. MIPD detectives responded to the Marriot and located the person who made the fraudulent charges. Further investigation revealed that the subject, identified as 38-year-old Hialeah resident, Rafael Angel Garcia, also had in his possession an additional thirteen possibly fraudulent credit cards, and cash totaling approximately $3,600.

MIPD detectives were able to determine that eleven of the cards were fraudulent. Mr. Garcia was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with forgery, fraudulent use of credit cards, grand theft, and unlawful possession of personal ID of another. MIPD detectives are still actively investigating this case to determine the extent of the use of the fraudulent credit cards.
