Marco Island Parks & Rec Offers a Complete Menu of Family Activity

 

 

“Mom, I’m bored – what can I do?” Both kids and adults alike have no excuse for boredom, with the many and varied programs offered at the City of Marco Island’s Mackle Park. There are programs for Youth ages 3 – 5 years, 6 – 14 years, 13 – 18 years such as soccer, competitive cheerleading, and social activities for teens. Men and women over the ages of 18 can participate in programs that will develop their abilities in crafts, language, different musical forms, and cards. Those inclined to improve physical fitness may indulge in yoga, T’ai Chi, and Jazz cardio. The whole family can enjoy outings such as movies in the park special picnics, concerts, the weekly Farmer’s Market, and bocce. Racquetball, Pickleball, and tennis are available at the nearby Racquet Center. Check out what is offered and register at the Office at Mackle Park.

Mackle Park Programs for Youth

Tot Youth Programs, Ages 3 – 5 years:

Start Smart Soccer – This program is geared for ages 3 – 5 years with the introduction and understanding of beginners soccer. Classes will begin Jan. 7 – Feb 11th from 1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. Cost is $40/resident and $48/non-residents. Pre-registration is required.

Youth Programs, Ages 6 -14 years:

Competitive Cheerleading with the Marco Magic will be held every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 . at Mackle Park. This is a competition travel based cheerleading program, which focuses on tournament style cheerleading. Registration will stay open at a monthly $40 rate. All travel and tournament fees are not included. Instructors include Lyndsi Koszo and Brittney Scheyder.  

Teen Programs, Ages 13 – 18 years:

Teen Advisory Council – Let your voices be heard on Friday, January 29 at 5:00 p.m. in the Teen Center. Teen Advisory Council will discuss teen upcoming programs, field trips, community service ideas, creating a teen t-shirt, and naming of teen advisory council positions. For further inquires call 389-5034. Grades 6th – 12th grade invited.

Black Light Graffiti Dance Party – Dance with your friends under the black lights on Saturday, January 23 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Mackle Park. Wear white clothing, and bring a highlighter or permanent marker to sign everyone’s shirts. This is a party that you won’t want to miss. Open to grades 6th – 8th grades. Cost is $5 per child.

Mackle Park Programs for Adults

Beginner Jewelry Making – Learn the fundamentals of beading jewelry, tool usage, beading placement, wire bending and wrapping for necklaces and bracelets. Learn about flexibility in strand numbers, and how to use findings, spacers, toggles and clasps. The goal will be to make two high end jewelry pieces at the end of class. Classes will begin in January and run for six weeks. Cost is $110/resident and $132/non-resident. Pre-registration is required, call Mackle Park for specific dates and times.

Beginner Spanish – Learn beginners Spanish with certified instructor Peter Vale. He will teach you the basics in pronunciation, spelling, creating sentences, and understanding the Spanish language. At the end of the course you will develop an expansive vocabulary, and gain an understanding on the Spanish language. Classes begin in January and run for six weeks. Cost is $85/resident and $102/non-resident. Pre-registration is required. Call Mackle Park for specific dates and times.

Piano for Fun (Level 1) – Begin to realize your life-long dream of playing the piano. We will learn the basics of keyboard geography, music reading, rhythm, chants, and group techniques. No talent necessary, pre-registration is required. Classes begin January 21 and run for six weeks. Cost is $80/resident and $96/non-resident. Call Mackle Park for details.

Tap Dancing – Beginning in January come out for a tapping good time with instructor Judy Reis. Each class will be a new tap dance to learn and understanding the fundamentals of the tap dance world. You will need to provide tap shoes and wear comfortable clothing. Classes are every Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Cost is $8/class. Walk-ins welcomed.

Line Dancing – Boot scoot around at Mackle Park on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. for $6/class. Instructor Iris Mooney will teach you the beginning steps of line dancing and at the end of class you will be able to take home a few to use on your own. Walk-ins welcomed!

Canasta – Come meld with us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Mackle Park. This is a free social program where you can enjoy the game of Canasta and make new Island friends.

Island Knitters – All knitters are welcome, expert to novice every Wednesday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Mackle Park. Join us and share your stitches and your stories. Free of charge, walk-ins welcomed!

Mah Jongg – Held every Thursday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Mackle Park. Come join the fun and make new friends. Walk-ins welcomed, free of charge.

Duplicate Bridge – Meets every Friday afternoon from 12:30 – 4:00 p.m. at Mackle Park. Duplicate Bridge is another way to meet new friends on Marco! Reservations are required. Please call Peachy at 642-6957 for available spaces.

Mackle Park Fitness

Ongoing:

Zen Yoga continues on Monday evenings from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. and Thursday mornings from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.  The fee is $15/visit.  The class offers an opportunity to explore the mind/body connection with the gentle movements of T’ai Chi and energized breathing of Qui Gong. It also includes deep relaxation and meditation components. Open to all fitness levels.

Be Fit Over 50 continues on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 7:45 p.m. The fee is $40/month or $5/guest fee.  Participants will enjoy the benefits of increased strength, muscle tone and flexibility. These weight bearing exercise programs will help combat osteoporosis and improve bone density.
                    
Jazz It Up Cardio is back by popular demand. Jazz It Up Cardio will be offered Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings from 7:45 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Cost is $5 for walk in or $40 for a 9 session punch card. Instructor Bobbie LeCroy-Lansdown will help you incorporate cardiovascular moves, abdominal work, and free weights for a work out that is heart pumping and sure to please.

Special Events for the Family

Movies in the Park Winter Series – schedule of upcoming movies at Mackle Park. Bring your coolers, blankets, and lawn chairs out to Mackle Park’s field and enjoy a free movie under the stars. Popcorn, sodas, and neon necklaces will be available for purchase. All movies start 10 – 15 minutes after sunset.

City of Marco Island Farmers Market – Located at Veterans Park every Wednesday beginning November 25 through April 14 from 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Visit with your local Florida vendors while they will be out selling some of their favorite home good items and crafts. Goods that will be at the market include fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, baked goods, salsas and sauces, flowers, seafood, candles, soaps, arts and crafts and much more.

Family Latin and Hip Hop Dance Night on Saturday, January 30 from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. join instructor Amber Prange for a FREE hour of Latin and hip hop dancing at Mackle Park. Dance off those holiday pounds at a dance class that is suitable for the whole family. All ages are welcome to attend. This is a part of our Family Fitness Month Series in the park. Winter Concert Series 2010 is back for another great year! Beginning on Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, concerts are located under the Mackle Park basketball court. Come out and enjoy an afternoon of free live band music in the park. Bring a lawn chair for seating is very limited. For our Winter Concert schedule please call Mackle Park at 642-0575. Concerts will continue through the middle of April. All are welcomed to attend!

Marco Island Bocce Tournament will be Saturday, February 27 from 9:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Mackle Park. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required. $40 per team. Cash prizes available for first, second, third, and fourth places. Call Bob Ray at 642-3838 for more details.

Valentine Family Picnic will be on Friday, February 12 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Come and enjoy the morning in the park with your significant other, spouse, family members, or friends. We’ll supply the food, you supply that special someone to come along for a picnic in the park.

Racquet Center Instruction

Islander Tennis Fundamental Clinics are held Monday and Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. The clinics will cover the basic strokes along with scoring, rules, and proper etiquette of the sport of a lifetime.  Participants in clinics will receive free court access from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and 1 hour of ball machine time during the session week.  The cost is $15.00/residents; $18.00/non-residents.

Drill and Tactics: Shot of the Week Clinics are held Wednesday and Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. A specific shot each week will be highlighted to help you fine-tune the stroke and utilize the shot to your advantage.  

Drill and Tactics: Doubles Strategy Clinic is held Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., 3.5 Level.  Clinic focus will be on strategy and positioning for all situations encountered in doubles play.

The cost for all Drill and Tactics Clinics is $15.00/residents; $18.00/non-residents. Weekly sign-up is required. 

Cardio Tennis is held Mondays and Thursdays 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Cardio Tennis combines a great cardio workout along with practicing those winning shots on the court.  Cost is $10.00 /residents; $12.00 non-residents.  Weekly sign-up is required

“City Kids” Junior Tennis Program – The children’s instructional program features four different levels and runs in six week sessions throughout the winter and spring.  Call the Racquet Center at 239-394-5454 for more information.

Pickleball Clinic – Free instructional clinic on Mondays from 9-10:00 a.m. at the Racquet Center.
