Marco Island Mattress Expands, Offers One-Stop Option

Call it a one-stop furnishing and accessory store designed to outfox the big box outfits.

“People simply don’t have to drive off the island any more,” said Marco Island Mattress Company’s Greg Shumer who, along with son Richard, has expanded the store from just 2,000 square feet in 2016 to 8,500 square feet today.

“Business is good,” Greg Shumer said, adding that demand from Marco customers as well as more showroom space becoming available has fit perfectly with the “one stop” strategy.

Thus, the island now boasts a full service bedding, furniture, window treatment and accessories store.

It started out fairly simply. Purely interested in a mattress store at the time, the father-and-son team had looked around the entire Naples area upon their arrival in 2014, but chose Marco when they found out it didn’t have a mattress store.

“We saw the niche,” said Rick Shumer.

At the same time, they also realized that competitive pricing would be a must, despite Marco’s image of unbridled affluence.

“We decided on a 100 percent lowest price guarantee,” said Greg Shumer.

“This means if people find lower prices on brands we sell – including on the Internet – we’ll give them 110 percent of the difference,” Greg said.

Added Greg: “you’ll meet some of the nicest people you’ve ever met in the business.”

Photos by Quentin Roux | Greg (seated) and son Richard have expanded Marco Island Mattress Company, and now say they’re able to compete with off-island big box stores.

ncluded in those people are interior designers Sharon Reid and Dena Zeches, Murphy bed and window treatment manager Jimmy Roes, and also Olga Duque.

All the big brand names are in there, said Richard. They include Beautyrest Black, Serta, Bradenton Young, Sam Moore and many others.

A “choc-o-block” warehouse means short waits for customers (usually next day), while custom orders through suppliers take a little longer.

When the Coastal Breeze visited the spacious and airy store, customer July Rybar was cheerfully in conversation with interior designer Dena Zeches.

Rybar said she was in the process of redesigning her condo interior. “They’ve done a phenomenal job redesigning my whole space,” she said, “and they’ve been easy to work with. They listen to your needs and put together a plan.”
