The Marco Island House and Business Decorating Contest Preliminary Judging took place on December 12 and 13 from 6:30 -10:30 PM. Judging teams traveled every street on the Island to view decorated homes.

The contest, originated by Dave Rice in 1997, is a Marco Island tradition. For 2016, Dave and Jeanne co-chaired the event supported by a multitude of well-known, civic-minded citizens. The nine teams of judges evaluated a total of 1,649 decorated single family homes as the tradition to “Light Up Marco” continues.

The finals are Friday, Dec. 16th with the entire judging committee including LCEC, CEO Dennie Hamilton along to evaluate the Top 10 and select the winner.

The judge’s trolley leaves Centennial Bank, 615 East Elkcam at 6:30 PM and the traditional car caravan is expected to follow for a first-hand viewing of the best of the best.

The Top 10 finalists and a list of prior winners lit up and properties deemed “Worth Seeing” are listed for those who wish to view Marco’s Christmas décor. The rules state that winners cannot repeat as winners for 5 years to ensure the opportunity for others to be successful. However, many prior winners still decorate and set very high standards for everyone.

“On behalf of the committee, a sincere thank you for all who enjoy the opportunity of “Lighting up Marco” and making everyone’s Christmas and Holiday Season special.  Spending an evening viewing properties is great family entertainment during the holiday season,” Rice said.
