Hyla Crane, Executive Director of the Marco Island Center for the Arts welcomed guests to Thursday’s event, saying “The Marco Island Center for the Arts, formerly known as the Art League of Marco Island, Inc., will celebrate its own 50th anniversary in 2020. We are thrilled to be a part of the City of Marco Island’s celebration. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with the remarkable team that put together this week of festivities.”

The celebration included a tour of the “Over 80, Under 30” collection in the center’s Lauritzen & Rush Galleries. Illustrating the anniversary theme of cherishing the past while embracing the future, the exhibit asks the alluding question “What’s age got to do with it?” A painter since the age of 12, “Over 80” artist Edythe Newbourne says, “Art is an expression of feeling, be it whatever medium is used.” “Under 30” artist Caitlin Rosolen De Jesus adds “Art is what it is, was what it was, and will be what it wants to be. We just have the good fortune of being a part of it.”

Newbourne, who once trained with art masters from the Zhejiang Academy of Art in Hanchow, China, was on hand to give demonstrations of Chinese brush painting, a unique art form that captures the spirit of an image rather than an exact replication. Longtime local resident Tara O’Neil, named the 2015 Artist of the Year by the Marco Island Foundation for the Arts, gave a demonstration of her own creative talents at the easel.

The center’s gift shop was buzzing with activity. Open daily from 9 to 4, the store is one of Marco Island’s best kept secrets. Offering a wide selection of unique items, it is the place to go for one-of-a-kind gifts created by South Florida artists.

Everyone got in touch with their creative genius that night as guests left their handprints and signatures on a canvas, designing an artistic showing of hands that will commemorate this special anniversary for many years to come.
