The Marco Breakers of the Marco Island YMCA came in 1st Place for the Winter 3.0 night USTA league. The “Breakers” then had to compete against Pelican Bay Park “Costa” who were undefeated in the spring session. A “Play-off” match was held on June 2nd at the Naples YMCA. Marco YMCA won three courts out of five. The Marco YMCA “Breakers” would now represent the USTA 3.0 Collier county at the Regional Playoffs in Sarasota, July 13,14 and 15th.

The “Breakers” went to Sarasota and had another elimination match against Lee/Charlotte County winners of “Paseo,” who were undefeated for the spring session. The Marco Breakers were scheduled to play “Paseo” and whoever won the best out of three, five court matches would represent the Southwest Florida Region at the National Tennis Competition in October in Tucson, Arizona.

The schedule was to play three sessions of five courts consisting of two singles and three doubles. The winner of these games would go on to represent our region at the National competition in Arizona. The “Breakers” were now scheduled to play “Paseo” twice on Saturday and once on Sunday. Their first match was Saturday morning where they won three courts out of five and were rained out for that afternoon.

The “Breakers” played them again on Sunday morning and again beat them three courts out of five. At this session they were almost complete having won two courts and lost two courts. The “Breakers” third court players were still playing and by winning could clinch a victory. The players were Milly Martin and Nancy Haugen. It was now coming down to the third set tie breaker where the “Breakers” could win it all. They did and then the “Breakers” were unofficially title winners. They still had one more session of scheduled matches against this team and officially all games had to be played. All agreed they had to play to win until the end. That afternoon the “Breakers” played the five courts and again won three out of five. The next challenge for the Marco Breakers is at the National competition in Daytona, Florida in August.

The competitors at this session will be the best from Central, South East, North and Southwest Florida. The winner here will go on to represent Florida at the National Level.
