It began with the first demolishing grab from the excavator back on September 12, 2016. Before long, the building at Mackle Park that had stood for 26 years was just a memory; a memory with a bright future to rise again, that is!
Nine months later, the new building is taking shape with walls, windows and so much more! Samantha Malloy, manager of Parks, Culture & Recreation for the City of Marco Island told Coastal Breeze News, “We are very excited about the new community center! We had a walk-through a couple of weeks ago and are already making plans to fill the rooms as soon as possible, which will hopefully be by September.” Malloy went on to say that Programs Manager Lola Dialis busy arranging programs with exercise instructors, line dancing, tap dancing, card groups, and local clubs that would like to rent rooms for their meetings and other activities. Malloy elaborated on the benefits of the new larger building, saying, “We will be able to offer more indoor activities during the hot summer days. We will have a large game room and a room with computers.”
Carlos Portu, chair of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) echoed Malloy’s enthusiasm, saying, “On behalf of myself and PRAC, I can say without a doubt that we are overjoyed at the progress of the soon-to-be completed Mackle Park Community Center. When completed, it will be a top-notch facility for our island’s residents, both young and old –fitting of its place in one of the jewels of our community – Mackle Park. A lot of hard work and dedication went into the design, planning and promoting of the project. I think it is something that all islanders should be very proud of come this fall.”
Once the new center opens a grand opening celebration will welcome Marco Island residents and visitors. But don’t feel that you have to wait for that. Come see the progress for yourself as you take a stroll around the lake or bring the family to enjoy the grounds and other outside activities that have been available all through the construction.
We look forward to this new beginning at Mackle Park, 1361 Andalusia Terrace. Coastal Breeze News will keep you updated.
