Andy: “We had a complicated relationship, she and I, all our lives. We went in very different directions. But somehow over all those years, I think we managed to give something to each other. Melissa expressed all the dangerous and rebellious feelings I never dared admit to.”
Melissa: “Now he tells me…”
The stage at the Marco Lutheran Church’s Main Hall was simply set with two chairs and a pair of local Marco Island celebrities reading the script of A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters” from 1988. Yet, it was a true theatrical experience for the more than 150 Lunch with Friends attendees.
The leading roles were originally played by such luminaries as Brian Dennehy and Mia Farrow. For the Marco Island version, Dave Rice played Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner was played by the ever-talented Hyla Crane of the Center for the Arts.
Dave Rice had a stellar performance portraying the rock-solid, letter loving Andrew Ladd III opposite the flighty, histrionic, drama queen, Hyla Crane as Melissa Gardner. But if you did not know better, it felt a lot like “art imitating life” on that stage.
Blessings were delivered by Reverend Schoof of the Marco Presbyterian Church. Food for the luncheon was provided by Sami’s Pizza Pasta Grill Restaurant.
The March Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, March 20th at 11 AM at the Marco Lutheran Church, 525 Collier Blvd. RSVP to: firstname.lastname@example.org or call Nancy Kot at 706-566-8532.
