Starting with the traditional boat parade, the creativity that Capriers exhibit was outstanding. Thanks to Mike Cox, who coordinated the parade and the Greater Naples Fire/Rescue Boat 90, which led the boaters. This year, our first responders had an exceptionally decorated boat all the while making it a safe event for all to enjoy.
As darkness crept in, cheers and camaraderie were shared between the boats and spectators as they progressed through the Isles. All the designs were creative, but the judges determined the winners were: First Place was Jeri Neuhaus with the Dragon Fly, second place was Kurt Mueller and Katie Smith with Red Neck Christmas, and third place was Joel Fitzgerald and Mike Cox with Hot Rod Santa. The judges said that it was an outstanding parade and the residents and visitors agreed, evidenced by their cheering.
The winners will have their names added to the Christmas Boat Parade plaque that hangs in the Capri Community Center and the captains will receive a $25 Gift Certificate from the sponsor The Island Gypsy Café, as well as an 8” by 10” framed picture of their boat. Thanks to all the captains and crews for their extra special efforts this year.
Golf Cart Parade
Another highlight of the holiday season is the traditional Isles of Capri Christmas Eve Golf Cart Parade. It started 10 years ago with about 12 carts that cruised up and down “most” of the streets. Each year the number of participants grows to this year’s record number – 56 carts, decorated to the nines! Some would argue that there were a few more, but 56 is amazing nonetheless.
This year, the parade went down every street on the Isles while crowds of residents and their guests lined the route amid cheers of Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and laughter over some of the designs. The array of costume pajamas and Christmas finery was extraordinary, as were the varied beverages carried in the carts!
The spectators had their chairs out, tables of food, assorted beverages with coats and blankets to ward off the chill. Here are just a few of the spectacular entries.
Special thanks to Nancy Anderson and Otis Tavlin for their organization of the 2018 Golf Cart Parade!
Jory Westberry has been a dedicated educator for over 40 years, the last 14 as Principal of Tommie Barfield Elementary, where she left her heart. Life is rich with things to learn, ponder and enjoy so let’s get on with the journey together!
HOME DECORATING CONTEST
It wouldn’t be the holidays without cheerful homes decorated for the season. Thanks to all the home owners/renters who shared their holiday spirit.
The three winning artists will receive gift cards. They could be used for more decorations for next year or paying their light bill this year! For those that decorated, thank you for letting your lights shine and make Isles of Capri the fantastic place it is.
