We’ve heard of Gasparilla – it was the name of a supposedly famous pirate, and it is also the name of an island off the coast of Fort Myers.
But, did he really exist? Was the island named in ancient maps long before he was reported to have marauded these coasts?
And, there was our own Juan Gomez who lived on Panther Key until he died aged 120 (or was it 105?). He wasn’t a myth. The Storter familyfrom Everglade and Colliers from Marco Island made sure he had supplies in his old age.
You can learn more on Friday, February 26, at 5:30 PM when local historian Craig Woodward gives an illustrated presentation in the function room at Island Café in Everglades City.
