I am commenting on the article published in the Marco Eagle on Friday, 15 May titled, Petition Filed, that is being circulated and pertains to the newly passed Marco Island Rental ordnance. The sub headline says “Citizens Group Initiates Effort to Derail Cities Rental Ordinance”. What the article failed to say is this is not a “Citizens Group” but rather it is a special interest group of realtors and home rental companies. This is a big business special interest group trying at its best to control Marco Island City Council and govern property owners, Condos and single family homes alike. They have a gold mine here on Marco by turning residences into hotels in our neighborhoods while cycling renters in on a weekly basis with total disregard for residents quality of life. They are conducting a commercial rental business which turns our neighbors homes into mini hotels in residential zoned areas of Marco. These firms are motivated only by profit at the expense of our quality of life; residents deserve better and that is what the majority of our City Council delivered after years of complaints.
The article says the petitioners are calling themselves “The Committee in Support of Marco Island” which consists of: Paul Tateo: Agent for Horizons Venture Inc., Shari Lynn Fairchild, Property and Real-estate Broker, Howard Reed: Managing Member Doricon LLC., Stephen Josselyn: Agent for Kelly Williams Realty (buy, rent, sell), Rita Bravo: Agent for Berkshire Hathaway Homeservice Florida Realty, June Prophet: Agent for Prudential Real Estate, William Holmes: President Community Association Managers of Marco Island, Eric Brechnitz: chair of the Marco Island Special Taxing District who has served as president of the Hideaway Beach Association, and Raymond James, President of Brechnitz Group. Judge for yourself. I for one suggest their motive is pure profit & commissions and has nothing to do with “Support of Marco Island”.
I am thankful that we have a City Council on Marco that will stand up for the property owners of this island against special interest such as this, Condos and single family homes alike.
