Ken Honecker: Running for Re-election

A lot has been accomplished in the past 3½ years. Long stalled projects like the Herb Savage Bridge (Smokehouse) are near completion and construction on the new Mackle Park Community Center will start shortly. The renovations of the Marriott were approved, when I was Chairman of Council, and the construction is scheduled for completion later this year.

A new professional City Manager was hired. Under his management, City departments were consolidated, new 3 year contracts with the police and firefighter unions were signed and a 5 year comprehensive budget (bucket plan) has been implemented. Code enforcement has been moved to the police department, new community police officers (CPOs) have been hired and a magistrate now hears code cases. The City now has a lobbyist working to bring money to Marco from the State. All of these actions were accomplished without special assessments or new taxes, just good Council leadership. The results of which have improved the quality of life for the citizens of Marco Island, while saving them millions of dollars.

However there is still work to be done; and this is why I am running for a second term. We are only in year 3 year of the 5 year budget plan. Without the plan, the City will have to borrow money in the future. The land development code (LDC), which was adopted from the County at incorporation, needs to be updated in a smart way. A comprehensive City wide plan needs to be developed to address the seasonal parking and traffic issues.

Therefore, today I have submitted the necessary paperwork to the City Clerk to run for re-election to Marco Island City Council. I thank all the residents of Marco Island, for your support over the years. It would be a great honor to continue to serve all of you and lead this island paradise into its 20th anniversary and beyond!

Sincerely,

Kenneth E. Honecker
