Lely’s veteran girls and boys track teams finished third and fourth respectively in the Community School of Naples Under Armour Invitational at CSN on Saturday, March 6. Marco Island Academy’s fledgling track team achieved several personal records in the large invitational event. The event was staged under cloudy skies with intermittent rain. Finally, a downpour scratched the last several events.
“Overall, we did great,” said Lely girls coach Sander Langebeeke. “The boys finished fourth and girls finished third even though we didn’t run the last two events. Our best distance performance today was by Jose Sanchez-Sanchez in the 1600m run. He finally broke five-minutes by running a 4:58 mile. The kids all ran really well, and it was unfortunate that we had to run in these weather conditions. We are looking forward to continually working hard and trying to achieve our goals we set in the beginning of the season.”
“The meet was great,” said Marco Island Academy coach Olivia Watt, a student at the University of Florida and a MIA track alum herself. “One of the best parts of being able to come back to MIA and coach a sport I used to compete in would have to be students. Our student athletes are positive, enthusiastic, and willing to work. It isn’t always easy to be a smaller school in track, especially when we’re competing with these bigger schools. The student athletes at MIA aren’t disheartened by that and have a positive attitude each day.”
“In the meet at CSN, we were focusing on individual personal records. Almost every MIA athlete that was competing at CSN had a personal record (PR). Yessenia Martinez PR’d in the 3200m. Iran Zarate-Centeno PR’d in the 100m, the 200m, and the long jump. Emily Reisinger PR’d in the 400m and the long jump. Ryan Sweeney PR’d in the 100m and the 400m. Ivan Harrison PR’d in the 400m. Zeke Morris PR’d in the 1600m.
