You’ve heard of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes? That is the story of an unhappy housewife who becomes enthralled with an old lady telling the tales of her past. Jersey Fried Tomatoes is a story about three women in their 80s who have passed on and are detained at the pearly gates of heaven for a review of their life and the choices they made. JJ (Judge and Jury) introduces them to the heaven’s mediator, Peter. It is Peter’s job to take them back and forth in time to evaluate their choices. There is Angelina, a feisty Italian girl from Newark, New Jersey who chooses the path of her heritage, wife and mother verses her passion to dare to be different. There is Willie an African American girl, also from Newark, who chooses a path unlike her mother, “fast and fashionable.” Her rise is her fall into the same path as her own mother. Lastly there is Kat, “Kit Kat” a socialite from Short Hills, New Jersey, who got everything she wanted except what she yearned for; unadulterated, pure love. The plays will go back and forth in time and is brilliantly written and directed by Gina Sisbarro. Gina was voted 2018 Artist of the Year for the Marco Island Foundation of the Arts.
Sisbarro is from New Jersey herself and has lived in Marco Island for past over 20 years. The play reflects her own heritage, and family who hail from Newark, New Jersey. The flashbacks will take from laughter to tears and back again. Gina said, “In this production you may see yourself, your mother, your grandmother or friends from your old neighborhood. It is a totally relatable play for our generation. It is a look back for all of us. You will ask yourself, what if…depending on your own choices you made when you were younger. You may discover it is never too late to change your own life plans.
Gina’s acting school, Sisbarro Acting Studio, is right here on Marco Island above Marco Office Supply on Bald Eagle Drive. She will be offering theater workshops and classes from public speaking to theater work. This is Gina’s third play she has written. Her other two plays which have been published are, “The Men of Rushmore and Their Wives” and “Battlefield of Brotherhood,” a civil war piece that took place on a Southern Florida plantation. She is also the author of two books “Finally Found,” a modern-day pirate romance. If you enjoyed “Fifty Shades of Grey,” this is one for your nightstand. Her other book went the opposite direction, a children’s book called “Booey and the Bug,” about a teenage girl who felt the world was crumbling until Riley, an adorable Bug, part terrier, part pug came into her life.
