The final Coastal Cruise to historic Fakahatchee Island will take place on Sunday, March 25, at 3:00 p.m. from Everglades National Park. This is the last in a series of four cruises hosted this winter by Friends of Fakahatchee. Previous voyages to the island were enjoyed by over 70 people. A chartered boat takes participants to the island where they climb the Calusa shell mound to the pioneer cemetery. A volunteer naturalist points out rare plants, some not seen on the mainland. On the return trip, there is a chance to see dolphins cavorting in the wake and birds roosting for the evening. The Coastal Cruise costs $75 per person and can be booked online at www.orchidswamp.org (click on Events). For information, phone Marya at (239) 695-2905.
