Spending 21 days in a vehicle with the same people can be very telling. Especially when you add the fact that there are two languages spoken in the vehicle with each distinct personality having different needs, wants and ideas. It can be very telling indeed. The flow of energy could be best described as the following at any given time: open, energized, opinionated, agitated, tired, fun, anxious (especially on the autobahn doing 110 mph!), caring, in need of space, educational – and through it all – LOVING.

One thing that each and everyone of us had in common was our breath. This was expressed in a variety of forms, however. There was the great exhale accompanied by

slumping shoulders; the gasp of inhale while viewing (so many!) amazing sights; the fast expulsive exhale accompanied by a few German epithets. There was also (more often) the signature exhale and “ahhhh” after the first swill of a brilliant lager at the end of a long day of sightseeing. And, of course, there was the daily ujayi (breath of the ocean) during hotel room yoga practice before breakfast. We experienced the breathe of life together and individually.

Then we learned words from many cultures. The language of Finland is different from Estonian; Sweden is different from Denmark; and Denmark is different from Germany. We decided on our short stays in each country, to find and remember the basics: thank you, your welcome,

please, toilette, beer, and cheers!

Practicing in the car, we mostly traversed the words from English to German, whereas this applied to all of us specifically. We shared, practiced and learned. We did all of these things, but most of all, while we shared, practiced and learned so many wonderful things… we LOVED. That is what friendship is all about.
