Captain Mary A. Fink
Fishing can be so much more than just fishing! The sport of fishing provides wonderful opportunities for wildlife observation, quality time with family and friends as well as tranquility, rest and relaxation. If you are new to the sport, or haven’t been fishing for a while but would like to, there’s no better way to learn than by doing it yourself with the guidance from others who are knowledgeable and patient.
There is a special fishing event coming in March that provides opportunities to learn or practice skills like casting, knot tying, cast netting, kayaking and much more. This event will take place March 14-15 in Matlacha for lady anglers on the gulf coast and is organized by Betty Bauman, the founder of “Ladies, Let’s go Fishing”! Known as the “No-Yelling School of Fishing,” this program prides itself for its non-intimidating atmosphere where there is no such thing as a “stupid” question.
The program in Matlacha begins on Saturday afternoon with hands-on skill stations conducted by instructors with experience in a number of fishing related disciplines including casting, tackle and bait selection, netting, gaffing and much more. Following the practical portion of the afternoon, raffles and fundraisers take place as well as a happy-hour where participants have an opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy networking opportunities.
On Sunday, participants may choose to set out on the water in a comfortable pontoon boat, charter boat or kayak to try newly learned or practiced skills in an attempt to hook up. Many species of fish are targeted in the beautiful fish rich mangrove maze of Matlacha. Some species targeted include mangrove snapper, sheepshead, flounder, red fish, sharks and crevalle jack, which are always great tackle testers!
“Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!” has a new program called “Ladies Choice,” where women can bring male guests to enjoy the weekend’s fishing activities. Additionally, there is a discount offered to women bringing teens along to experience the fun and excitement provided by the program.
LLGF offers weekend fishing events in other locations in Florida so that each of the fishing experiences/events is different allowing for more skills to be learned and appreciated.
The LLGF 2015 Event Schedule is as follows:
- March 14-15: Ft Myers/Matlacha – Matlacha Community Center
- April 17-19: South Florida/Dania Beach – I.T. Parker Community Center
- May 29-31: Treasure Coast – Stuart Corinthian Yacht Club
