The Marco Island Kiwanis Family 5K run and walk offered something for everyone on Saturday, November 18 at Tigertail Beach. But the biggest winner was the Marco Island Charter Middle School (MICMS), who was the event’s beneficiary.

For the second year in a row, Cipriano Martinez of Naples was the overall winner, blazing through the Hideaway Beach course in 17:04, over a minute ahead of the next-closest competitor.

“He’s very fast,” said event organizer Preston Stiner, “he smokes it.”

A total of 217 runners and walkers crossed the finishing line. This year’s group included a lot of walkers.

“We’re actually going to try to encourage more walkers to come out in the future,” Stiner said, “it fits our demographic.

Plus, Hideaway is such a beautiful place to walk.”

The top female finisher was Alexis Lamb of Marco Island, who finished with a time of 20:26. Lamb finished fourth overall.

The Kiwanis event is unique with the make up of its participants, who ranged in age from toddlers to senior citizens. There were even a handful of dogs on the route.
