Most music fits into categories. Genres, if you will. Rarely do you run across a band that defies their genre, spilling across to others and forming a style all their own. Over the last few tweeks, Music Notes has delved into the world of some great local, island style musicians. Gator’s latest dose of sun-soaked sound advice is, to check out this rock/reggae/ska/calypso/dancehall/hip-hop/punk band that hails from Marco Island, or as they call it, “The Rock.” There, you will find out what all this musical jargon is about.
Named for the hilly residential road that parallels SR-92, directly behind the Coastal Breeze headquarters, The Sheffield Crew has been making a name for themselves on, and around Marco for as long as I can remember. I reckon my memory isn’t what it once was, but it’s a fact; they have been “skankin” around the south Florida reggae scene for almost a decade.
Members, Chris Jacobs (lead vocal, guitar & brass), Shaun Jacobs (drums), Danny Iocanellli (lead guitar) and Steve Mastrangelo (bass) make up the current lineup that has seen its share of change over the years. “We put a full length album together with the help of Marc Regan (who has worked on albums for Sublime, Long Beach Shortbus, & The Ziggens) and have been touring in support of that album.” “When The Night Falls,” was completed this past September. Folks can check it out at TheSheffieldCrew.com and enter password OLABA-OLABA for a free download!
The Sheffield Crew is back in the studio, as of late, working on their next project, expected out this summer, called “A Sunny Place for Shady People,” as well as some dancehall tracks. Fans can look out for the first single off the album to be released shortly. When Chris spoke to Music Notes, he explained his inspiration. “Pure party, man! The life. Writing a good tune. Making the people have a good time and getting the girls moving on the dance floor!”
They have been called, “a ska and dub-fused reggae rock quartet that delivers vibrant island-flavored jams led by the toasts-rhymes of vocalist Chris Jacobs,” by Creative Loafing. Their website reads, “…this collection of some of the area’s top musicians has already gained a devoted, often fanatical Florida fan base by constantly loggingmiles all over the state and beyond. After pressing and quickly selling 1,000 copies of 2008’s “Leaving Babylon” E.P, The Sheffield Crew released “When The Night Falls,” their second full-length album, in the summer of 2011.
Known all over Florida for their high-energy shows, The Sheffield Crew have performed with such notable acts as Fishbone, The Movement, Passafire, The Supervillains, Rebelution, Badfish, Pato Banton, Cas Haley, The Van’s Warped Tour, The Spam Allstars, Kymani Marley, and too many others to name. It’s apparent to Music Notes that these boys are on the right path. Doing what I always try to do – “stayin’ playin’ and movin’ ‘round the sound!” Check ‘em out live at a show soon!
At the end of our “pow-wow,” I turned the floor over to the Crew. This is what they had to say: “Everyone can see our video at Gulfsterpresents.com and check the schedule on our website or facebook. com/thesheffieldcrew. We would like to thank Gator Nate for hooking the interview up. Shout out to DJ RifiK, Adam at Gulfsterpresents, and big up to Florida bands and the Florida scene. Olaba Crew, B-One, Commonground, Sowflo, Askultura, Stop the Presses, Resinated, Burning Tree, Badda Skat, Spred the Dub, The Hobies, The Wholetones. Thanks to everyone that makes the scene so sick, and on and on ‘til the break of dawn…”
To all the musicians and bands that have made up “Jammin’ Island Style,” thank you so much for making it possible! J. Robert, Frank Carroll, Sowflo and Sheffield Crew. Stay tuned for more artist spotlights in the issues to come. We will also be starting another series soon, “Legends of Marco Music”, featuring the folks that have been entertaining islanders for decades.
Thank you for reading, we appreciate all band/musician suggestions and ideas for future articles. Subjects for editorials will ultimately be appointed by Music Notes staff. ‘Till next tweek…Jam on! Later, Gator
