For the last ten years, Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) have more than dipped their toes in the water to host STEM Conferences for their students, teachers, parents, and administrators. What is STEM? It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. After a few years, CCPS re-invented the conference to add an “A” for the Arts, and the name evolved into the CCPS STEAM Conference. Last year, because of the increase in events, activities, participation, and demonstrations, it has now transformed into the CCPS STEAM EXPO and that’s positive progress. Ever heard of Steve Spangler?
In previous years, it was held on a Saturday in January at Golden Gate High School. Lindy George, a CCPS Digital Innovation/STEAM Specialist, had coordinated the STEM/STEAM Conference activities with her team. The participation grew by leaps and pole vaults and proceeded to use spaces in the entire school to showcase all the STEAM activities. This year will be different since masks and social distancing are not possible in a large venue like this one. Virtual participation is the safest and besides, more participants than ever can attend. Ever heard of Steve Spangler?
I hear a chorus of yesses and no’s to that question about Steve Spangler! Quoting the CCPS home page: “He’s a best-selling author, STEM educator and business leader branded by TIME magazine as one of their most influential people of the year because of his passion to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.”
On the Collier County Public Schools homepage, at this address – https//www.collierschools.com/steamexpo – you’ll enjoy a video of Spangler that will tickle your funny bone, raise your curiosity quotient, and encourage you to share this upcoming event with your friends and neighbors. And it’s easy to register. I’ve even taken photos of the site and provided directions in case you are technology challenged like me. And best of all, you can participate via laptop, tablet, or mobile device from anywhere in the world.
Did I mention that Spangler is a frequent guest on the Ellen DeGeneres Show? He performs his “science magic”, and she is just as perplexed as the rest of us. Ellen has dubbed Steve “America’s Science Teacher.” He has over 1 billion followers on his Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and other social media venues. He has made more than 1,500 television appearances and has received multiple Emmy Awards. He also provides professional development at regional and national association meetings where he challenges teachers to ramp up connections to science.
Spangler’s opening session starts streaming after the Opening Remarks at about 9:00 a.m. Family STEAM activities will start at 10:20 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., CCPS will host a Facebook LIVE with Spangler for an opportunity to ask science questions and get answers from our special Science Teacher. Some of the events on the schedule include: Science: Fun with Air Density, Technology: Amplifying Your Student Voice, Engineering: From the Classroom to the Clouds, Arts: Soundwave Art, and more.
Why haven’t you registered yet? Call the kids and grandkids and they can also listen and learn from wherever they are. What could be better? And you can discuss concepts with them afterward and forever more. So, what are you waiting for? Copy the link and on your computer or phone, register for this hilarious scientific virtual opportunity. Learn with your favorite children of all ages and have a thrilling scientific experience on Saturday, January 30, 2021.
