Island Half Marathon Turns 10!

The Marco Island Half Marathon, affectionately called, “The Bridge Run” is celebrating its decennial year.

On Sunday, March 18, runners of every level are invited to participate in the Marco Island Half-Marathon and 5K-Walk/Run. In its 10th year, the Half-Marathon starts at 7:30 AM, while the 5K Walk/Run, celebrating its fifth event, starts at 7:45 AM. The celebratory day culminates with a party until noon at the Shoppes of Marco located on the corner of Barfield Drive and San Marco Road. A complimentary beer for each runner will be provided.

Event organizers and long time residents, Heather Mastrangelo, ML Meade and Fred Kramer are excited to welcome this years’ runners from as far away as Canada. In past years the event has seen up to 750 participants.

“We have seen our numbers grow through the years and feel this year’s field will be our finest yet,” said Meade. “We have an international feel we believe will grow as those who have competed return and our profile increases.”

Mastrangelo has recently become the Race Director and feels that running in this race can be a great opportunity for the community to come together. “This race embodies everything that running should be. Especially since Hurricane Irma, the togetherness of the community is monumental and has never been as cohesive as it is today,” she said.

The Marco Island Half-Marathon, Inc. is a non-profit corporation dedicated to bettering the community. Marco Island beneficiaries are the Marco Police Foundation, Marco Fire-Rescue Foundation, Marco Island Parks and Recreation, the Charter Middle School, Greater Marco YMCA, Marco Patriots and the Lely Road Runners.

“We are proud of the impact our event has had,” said Meade. “Many loyal individuals and businesses engage with us annually. We enjoy those relationships and anticipate adding more because of the affinity our residents have for our area.”
