The Island Garden Center of Marco Island will soon have a new home after more than 35 years in the same location.
But the new location could hardly be any closer. The business is moving to a new building its owner Chris Burt is erecting on the lot right next door to the Island Garden Center’s current site along San Marco Road.
Construction began recently on what will be a 40-foot-by-60-foot, open-air building, just like the current structure. Work should be completed in August, said Burt, who purchased the business in 2010.
“This property has changed hands and we’ve been looking to make a change anyway,” he said of the business’ current location, which is leased. “In looking around, the opportunity came up. We thought it was a good business move.”
Dallas-based 1206 Antler LTD purchased the property for $900,000 last November from Jeffrey and Linda Biden of Dresden, Maine.
Island Garden Center stocks a wide range of landscaping products, everything from mulch, stone, shell, top and potting soils, fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, flowers, assorted varieties trees, herbs, orchids, pottery, concrete statuary, fountains and more. The company also has a full-service landscape renovation division that includes design and installation services.
Those same products and services will be offered when the new location opens, as will something new to the business, a paver division. “We’ll do walkways and pool decks and things like that,” said Burt.
He said a grand opening celebration will be sometime in the fall.
