The Power of Pink
Firefighters, police officers and community leaders who volunteer their time to drive around the country in pink fire trucks in an effort to increase awareness of breast cancer. Recently, the fire trucks rolled into Naples, including one pulling the enormous 10’ tall stainless steel ribbon (shown). These trucks carry the signatures of thousands of people they’ve come in contact with across the country. One man signing the truck said it was an emotional experience for him. His wife is a cancer survivor.
The Pink Heals tour was the brainchild of a firefighter in Glendale, Arizona, Dave Graybill. Dave started by asking his fire department to wear pink to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness. Later, he came up with the pink truck idea to show that commitment to increasing awareness would never end.
The only money the Guardians collect are profits from the sale of the Pink Heals t-shirts they bring to each stop. This pays for the gas and insurance for the fleet. Dave said the organization refuses to let anyone sponsor or own the trucks. Dave believes 100% of money collected (other than the t-shirts) should stay in the local community.
The Pink Heals tour asks everyone, men, women and children to show their support and WEAR PINK on October 25th, 26th and 27th.
All women are invited to an open house at Curves on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. to learn more about breast cancer awareness. Presentations will be made by owner, Deborah Spalvins and esteemed guests, including: Dr. Patty Poling, local internist; Melissa Felice, local American Cancer Society director; and Val Simon, publisher of the Coastal Breeze News. You will also hear from one of our strong, inspirational breast cancer survivor/thrivers. Additionally, there will be a nail and massage pampering station.
Curves of Marco Island is committed to strengthening millions of women with their unique 30-minute strength training and cardio workout. In addition to encouraging regular exercise, Curves strives to educate women in achieving optimal health, encouraging healthy eating and regular physical checkups. To encourage getting regular yearly mammograms, Curves will completely waive the membership fee during the month of October for new members who show proof of having had a mammogram in the last year. The membership fee will also be waived with proof of a donation to the American Cancer Society.

In a show of support for the extraordinary innovations planned for the Marco Island Academy, Kelly Gerber will host a trunk show at The Esplanade on Saturday, October 16th, from 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. featuring her “Sophie Rose” necklaces as well as other, one-of-a kind, beautiful, and glamorous pieces of jewelry. Celebrity fans include: Cindy Crawford, Joss Stone, Alicia Keys, among many others.
She will graciously donate 10 percent of her proceeds that day to the Marco Island Discovery Center, which is the 501 (c)(3) non-profit, tax exempt fundraising arm of the Marco Island Academy.
At this event, the Marco Island Discovery Board of Directors will unveil the exciting design for the high school around 5:30 p.m. There will also be appetizers, live music by Cleo, raffles and more. The event is free to the public, so everyone is welcome to attend.

Marco Island Academy
The Marco Island Discovery Center is proud to present a fun, and exciting 10-day fundraising event called the “Bridal Boutique,” which will offer new and gently used wedding and evening gowns for sale at 75% off their original price. The “Bridal Boutique” will take place at the Esplanade in the Marco Island Academy’s office at 740 North Collier Boulevard Suite 107 from Jan. 13th thru Jan. 23rd. The idea came from Jody Barrett who is currently serving on the Board as the Vice-Chair and is coordinating the Fundraising events for the Academy. By using her creative talents and ability to think “outside-of-the-box”, she has developed a brilliant way to generate funds for the Academy. Her goal is to generate community excitement and involvement by offering people several ways to get involved in supporting one of the most innovative high schools in Collier County, which is scheduled to be opened in August 2011.
At a time when many people are struggling financially and are not in a position to donate money, Ms. Barrett realized that even in tough economic times there lies an opportunity. Since people continue to get married, regardless of the economy, why not offer wedding and evening gowns at a significant discount? The inventory of dresses for the “Bridal Boutique” will consist of brand new gowns donated by “Tie The Knot”, Naples only premier, full-service, luxury bridal boutique and gently used gowns donated by women ready to part with their own wedding gown or gently used evening wear. Everyone benefits, since the Marco Island Discovery Center is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, all donations are tax-deductible and 100% of the proceeds go directly to support the Marco Island Academy.

Jessica Clark, owner of “South Beach Hair” will be donating her time to do the hair and make-up of all the models in the fashion show on January 13th.
The Marco Island Discovery Center would like to thank the community for their enthusiasm and support and will continue to accept new or gently used gown donations. The goal is to be able to offer a wide variety of sizes and styles for every customer who wants a great deal on a fabulous gown.

South Beach Hair
South Beach Hair is a well-known hair salon on Marco Island, located in the newly revamped Marco Walk Plaza for over fifteen years. Owner Jessica Clarke decided early on in life that she wanted a career in cosmetology. By the time she graduated from high school she had already completed her cosmetology training at a local Chicago vocational school. Over the years, she has expanded her original training and as a stylist provides a full array of services, including color, haircuts, and Great Lengths extensions. One of her specialties is color correction. Of the many plusses of being a stylist on the island, Jessica feels she has had the privilege of encouraging the many kids that have come through her chair to follow their dream of an education, even if it is not the traditional 4-year degree.
Her boutique salon offers a vast array of services to, not only women, but children and men as well. As a full service hair salon offering color, cuts, Great Lengths extensions and nails, they also offer permanent make-up, eyelash extensions, and a complete line of skincare.
The staff is comprised of stylist Nancy Verdon who is a former owner of three salons in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Nancy brings many, many years of styling experience to the salon. In addition to Nancy, there is Erica Weber, formerly of Michigan, who is an accomplished veteran stylist. She has been on Marco for many years. This last year saw the addition of Donna Harrington, also formerly of Michigan, who is a very accomplished stylist and former salon owner as well.
A full line of nail services, as well as hand therapy and medical pedicures using Footlogix Pediceuticals products, are offered. The salon also has the latest and greatest nail product known as Shellac by CNDC. This is a revolutionary new product that does not chip as is so common with most nail polish. Facials, micro-dermabrasion and micropeels are provided in the newly-renovated treatment room by certified medical esthetician Pamela Broad. Pam has over thirty years’ experience in the skincare industry and has been instrumental in bringing physician-grade skin care products to the salon. It was specially formulated to deal with the special issues that cancer patients face when undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.
Permanent make-up and eye-lash extensions, which are currently the rage, are performed by Neli Nelz, who brings a wealth of expertise in the field. Neli has the added benefit of being able to perform more complicated procedures in a physician’s office if necessary, rather than the salon.
Bridal Packages surpassing the average in the community are offered by providing the bride and her party with not only a day of beauty, which includes hair, nails, facials and make-up application, but a catered brunch or lunch if desired. Bridal services are offered on or off-site and can include photography, videography and any other services that the bride might request. Destination weddings have, over the years, become so popular that, by offering these services, South Beach Hair has added another dimension to the salon.
