In-House Trip to Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park

A25-CBN-12-11-15-14Recently the students at Island Montessori Academy were lucky to have an “in-house” field trip to learn about Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. The goal was to have students understand the benefits of prescribed fire, become familiar with different types of habitats found in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park and the animals that live in them. The children engaged in hands-on activities including

 

 

learning about the Florida Black Bear, American Alligator, Florida Panther, various birds and insects, fire and field equipment/attire and the role of the houndsman on the Florida Panther Project. Presenters from Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park included Park Ranger Steven Bass, Biologist Assistant/Park Ranger Karen Relish, Administrative Assistant WynLyn McBride, as well as Catherine Hatch, a retired educator and volunteer, Cyril Marks, volunteer and Cougar McBride, houndsman for Rancher’s Supply Inc., contractor to state and federal agencies.
