The Marco Island Police Department is committed to the prevention of impaired driving, removing impaired drivers from our roadways and educating the public on the critical subject of impaired driving. To facilitate success in these mission areas, the Marco Island Police Department will be conducting an Impaired Driving Checkpoint November 17, 2012 commencing at 9:00pm. The checkpoint will be located at 1089 N Collier Blvd.
The checkpoint’s emphasis will be:
- Removing impaired drivers from the roadway;
- Reducing the likelihood that impaired drivers will operate their vehicles on our roadways;
- Creating a heightened awareness regarding impaired driving;
- Educating the public on the dangers of impaired driving as we approach the holidays.
Impaired driving is not a victimless crime. Motorists are reminded it is a crime to mix alcohol, drugs and driving, and that failure to heed this warning places us all at risk. While it may take several drinks for someone to become impaired, impairment begins with the first drink.
According to Marco Island Police Department statistics there have been 124 DUI arrests in the vicinity of 1089 N. Collier Blvd. since 2003. Fifty of those arrests involved vehicle crashes with property damage or personal injury.
Through daily enforcement, sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols by Marco Island Police Officers, in cooperation with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, we are confident that our concerted effort to curb traffic fatalities, injuries and crashes on Marco Island will be successful.
In addition to avoiding driving while impaired, citizens and motorists can help in other ways too. Promptly report drivers you believe to be impaired by dialing 9-1-1.
