As business becomes more global, it has a tendency to become less personal. The internet allows us to conduct business with less frequent personal interaction. Because of this technology, it is easy to forget that a business, any business, still relies on people and community to be successful.
Keith Dameron, Vice President and Business Development Officer at IberiaBank, works hard to ensure that “community” is still a prime consideration in doing business at a local level.
“It’s a way to give back to the community,” says Keith. “It’s a way to stay connected with the people and provide a service that benefits everyone.”
What Keith is talking about is a series of community lectures and events that are held by IberiaBank, both on Marco Island and in Naples. The three largest include the “In the Round” and “Health PLUS” lectures plus their Shred Party. The lectures are held in the IberiaBank lobby, and begin with a 5:30 PM welcoming reception, followed by a presentation from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. The Shred Party events are held in the bank’s parking area.
“In the Round” is a series of lectures on many different subjects. They have included authors, musicians, topic-driven business lectures, presentations by local organizations andmore. Refreshments are provided and the cost is $3/person.
“Health PLUS” is a series that follows the “In the Round” format, but is focused on medical issues. This includes a wide variety of educational, preventative and awareness topics.
Shred parties are held a couple times a year, and give members of the community a chance to bring in their sensitive documents for secure disposal. The atmosphere is festive and social with refreshments and music. The donation is $3 per bag/box and 100% of the proceeds are given to local and non-profit organizations. The documents are shredded on the spot to ensure that all information is securely disposed of. There have been 16 Shred Parties to date, with an amazing average of 11,600 pounds (5.8 tons) of paper shredded at each event. Shred Party #17 is on November 14 this year.
“I operate on four words when I organize the events. ‘I – have – no – money’,” says Keith. “The people we bring in volunteer their time and share their knowledge as a way of giving back to the community. It’s a win-win for everyone.” The $3 per person charge helps cover the cost of refreshments.
“The reward is talking with a customer in the lobby, orrunning into someone at the coffee shop who says, ‘I really got a lot out of that last lecture. It made a difference to me.’ There is no matrix set up to translate each session into a business transaction. That’s not what it’s about. On a personal level, I enjoy doing it and am fortune enough to be part of an organization that believes in their community strong enough to want to give back at a local level.”
Building on the success of holding 65 “In the Round” and 36 “Health PLUS” lectures, the series continues to gain momentum with no indications of a slow down. More workshops and events are being planned for the upcoming season. For more information or to reserve in advance, please contact the Marco Island IberiaBank at 239-393-2400. Also be sure to keep an eye on the Coastal Breeze News calendar for a listing of upcoming events.
