In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, the devastating tropical cyclone that recently hit Texas, people in Southwest Florida are asking how they can help. Many local clubs, churches and organizations are pitching in to assist those in need in Houston and surrounding areas.
The United Church of Marco Island is doing two things to help. Reverend Dr. Mark Williams, Senior Minister advised that the church is taking up a special collection. In addition, the Bargain Basket Thrift Store will donate a portion/percentage of their sales until Saturday.
Florida Kiwanians have been in contact with clubs in the Houston, Galveston, Port Aransas, Victoria, Baytown, Rockport and Pasadena, areas that will be distributing boxes of personal items to people in need. Online donations can be made directly through the district’s website. Checks can be made payable to Kiwanis Children’s Fund and “Disaster Relief Fund” written in the memo, and sent to: Kiwanis Children’s Fund, P.O. Box 6457, Dept. #286, Indianapolis, IN 46206.
Local Rotary clubs are working with Meals of Hope to help feed the thousands of affected families. The coordination of volunteers and fundraising is being done in Texas by the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church and the Rotary Clubs of District 5810. To donate to the Meals of Hope event for Texas make your checks payable to Meals of Hope and mark in the memo line, District 6960 Hurricane Harvey packing. Mail to Meals of Hope, 2221 Corporation Blvd., Naples, FL 34109. The food will be given to local Rotary clubs and churches as needed, and the rest directly to the Feeding America Food Bank who will distribute through emergency channels.
Florida Realtors members are being asked to donate items such as adhesive bandages, flashlights with batteries, safety pins, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, hand sanitizer, disposable razors, shaving cream, combs/brushes, soap/body wash, cotton swabs, pocket tissues, lotion, mouthwash, antibacterial ointment and sunscreen/ bug spray. Items are being collected at the Marco Island Area Association of Realtors office until September 6.
