As the 2012 election continues to divide our island and our nation, it is important to remember those who fought for our freedoms; including the right to vote. In honor of Veterans Day, Tommie Barfield Elementary, the City of Marco Island and VFW Post 6370 have organized events on Marco Island to celebrate the men and women of the United States Military.

On November 9, Tommie Barfield Elementary’s Morning Musicians will host “A Salute to our Veterans” at 9:00 AM in the cafeteria. Under the direction of Lisa Braren, students will sing and speak to a crowd of local veterans, honoring their service. Lely High School’s Junior ROTC Color Guard will also be on hand.

The City of Marco Island is honoring our veterans on November 11, at 11:00 AM. In observance of Veterans Day, the VFW of Marco Island, Post 6370, will lead the community in ceremony at Veterans Community Park, 901 Park Avenue. A flag raising ceremony will honor all five branches of the Military: the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force. The Marco Island Strummers will provide music and the District 7 Coast Guard Auxiliary will provide a flyover of its C130 during the ceremony.

The VFW will then lead the way as the celebration moves over to Mackle Park. In honor of its 15th year of Cityhood, the City of Marco Island is hosting a series of events at Mackle Park, the first of which is held in accordance with the Veterans Day Ceremony. The “Fun Day at Mackle Park” will offer a wide array of activities for children and adults from noon until 3:00 PM. Balloon artists, face painting, a bounce house, games, crafts and dancing are sure to keep the children entertained. Kids will also have the chance to check out the inside of a fire truck and police car.

The Marco Island Historical Society, Chamber of Commerce, City Departments and Veterans of Foreign Wars will be on hand showcasing Marco Island’s heritage.

Now is the time to come together and raise the flag in honor those who have fought to give this nation the title as “The Land of the Free and The Home of The Brave.”
