Holiday Season in Goodland

By Natalie Strom

The holidays are here! And Goodland is preparing for the season in many ways. Thanksgiving was celebrated in usual fashion: traditional turkey dinners were shared all over town. With Christmas now just around the corner, locals are looking forward to getting crafty, feeling jolly and decorating their Christmas trees.

On December 3rd and 4th, Goodland will host its annual Christmas Bazaar. The event will be held at the new Goodland Boat Ramp Park from 10AM to 3PM both days. Goodland is home to many talented artists who will feature their arts and crafts at this event. Some of the unique offerings to be featured include hand-painted coconuts and stone crab buoys, hand-made jewelry and shell art and many other island-inspired creations. Some of Goodland’s musicians will be on hand to serenade shoppers with their bluegrass tunes. Local restaurant, Marker 8, will be providing food for sale. This is the perfect way to find a one-of-a-kind gift for that person on your list seems to have everything.

One of Goodland’s finest talents is helping to spread holiday cheer this year with her paint brush. Denise Santos, a local for nearly 25 years, has been busy adorning the windows of Goodland with holiday-inspired themes. One such painting, a penguin in a snowy setting, can be seen on the three-pane window at the Goodland post-office.

Santos, a professional sign painter by trade, has made signs for many of the businesses

in town. Her work includes signs at The Old Marco Lodge, The Little Bar Restaurant, Calusa Marina, and the Goodland Post Office. Through her company, Premiere Designs, Santos also works on billboard graphics all over the country.

Santos will also be painting windows on Marco Island for the holiday season. To watch her in action, check out a YouTube video of her entitled, “Goodland’s Penguin.” Watch as the Post Office penguin comes to life, frame by frame. If you are interested in having your windows done she may be reached at 239-450-0824.

As if that wasn’t enough holiday cheer, folks will also be able to buy Christmas trees in Goodland this year. Heavenly Evergreens will be selling Christmas trees from the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia right across the street from Stan’s. As of November 27th, trees have been available for sale from table top size to 12- feet tall. They will be available all the way through Christmas Eve, while supplies last. Heavenly Evergreens will also be selling fans and wreaths at the Goodland Christmas Bazaar.

‘Tis the season indeed! So if you’re having a hard time finding your jolly, come on down to Goodland! The holiday cheer will be sure to warm your heart and have you humming Christmas songs well into the New Year.
