The Marco 5 mile Hill Run gave way to winners who experience running hilly traverses in their home states.

Jesse Armbruster of Columbus, Ohio and Jennifer Rapaport of Medford, Massachusetts attacked the 17 hilly sections of the race, fighting chilly weather and a strong head wind to the finish line to win easily.

Armbruster won in a time of 27:48.7. It was 51 seconds faster than second-place finisher Adam Cholewin of Fort Bragg, NC (28:37.5) and more than two minutes faster than third-place finisher Nick Kamen of Naples (30.05.6).

Rapaport’s time of 32.53.2 was just over two minutes ahead of Rosie Poling of Marco Island (34:55.3). Third-place finisher Beth Schadd of Boise, ID, came in with a time of 36:59.9.

winners (40-and-over) were Kip Kinn, 56, of Bucyrus, Oh in 32:26.5 and Denise Soren, 51, of Deerfield, IL in 37:10.9.

For Armbruster it was his second straight area win after capturing the Franklin Templeton Shootout 5K Run in Naples on Dec. 12.

“I didn’t mind the temperature (56 at race time), but the head wind on the back stretch was tough,” he said.

For Rapaport it was her first time in the run. “I think I had an advantage with a lot of the runners not used to running over hills like I am,” she said. “I have earned my Christmas cookies.”

Marco’s Poling, 16, cross country and track star at Lely High, said, “I enjoyed the run. The day was beautiful and I

liked the weather. I was just out having fun with my friends.”

Mark Bydaleck, 60, of Grand Rapids, MI, placed eighth in his class but added the Marco run to his quest of running in every state. He is running to earn donations for his “Team Lucky 7” a non-profit foundation in support of Brain Disease. His motivation came after losing his mother to Alzheimer’s, he said.

More than 200 runners competed for the second straight year.
