The Greater Marco Family YMCA will be hosting their annual Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 28, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This three-hour event is free to the public and hopes to encourages kids and their parents to get out and get active.

“YMCA of the USA has Healthy Kids Day events once a year, usually held the last Saturday of April,” explains Jennifer Bristow, Health Fitness and Aquatics Director of the Greater Marco Family YMCA. “Each YMCA is independent and runs their own healthy kids day, choosing what they want to do for it. We are making ours a community event, so you don’t need to be a member at the Y to participate. Anybody can come.”

Kids of all ages and kids at heart are welcome to attend the activity-packed day. Plans include a bounce house, tug-o-war, obstacle courses, physical fitness stations, pool and water safety, a balloon toss and a make-your-own fruit salad stand. “The kids will get a punch card and as they go to each station and complete the activity, they will receive a

punch on that card. Once the card is full, they will get a free t-shirt,” adds Bristow.

The Y will also feature karate, gymnastics and kids drums demonstrations. Free swimming will be offered at the Y’s olympic-sized pool with parent supervision required.

“While Healthy Kids Day is for the kids, it’s also for parents to have some resources,” continues Bristow. The Marco Island Police Department and Fire Department will be on hand for the day. The MIPD will be offering finger-printing for kids while the MIFD will be performing fire safety demonstrations. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office plans on bringing McGruff the Crime Dog to speak to the kids while Drug Free Collier’s Operation Medicine Cabinet will be available for the collection of expired or unused prescriptions. Other organizations such as The American Cancer Society, Physician’s Regional Hospital, Kriger Orthodontics, and the Children’s Advocacy Center will have booths set up to pass out information to all in attendance.

“We will have Summer Camp and Specialty Camp information available as well,” states Bristow. “The theme this summer is called ‘Take on Summer.’ We want to

encourage kids to realize the importance of staying active and staying fit. It can be fun to do some exercises. It’s also a great way to be together with your family. You don’t need a lot of equipment or a membership to a gym to stay active.”

This is what Healthy Kids Day is all about. Continues Bristow, “I think the most important thing is that we want our community members to not only come and check out the Y, but just to have fun with their families for a couple of hours. It’s a great way to learn that it’s easy, and fun, to have a healthy lifestyle.”

A special thanks is due to both Coldstone Creamery and Sunshine Stitchers for making this free day and free t-shirts possible. The YMCA depends on sponsors such as these in order to provide such services to the community.
