Gulfshore Opera has adjusted to these challenging times by offering an “Opera al Fresco” concert series which, by popular request, is continuing to add open air events. GO has collaborated with Marco Historical Society and Shangri-La in the past but will partner with these venues in a new way for Opera al Fresco concerts this March. Every year, GO has performed at the Rose Auditorium, but this year Gulfshore Opera will be performing in the grounds outside the Marco Island Historical Museum. The performance at Shangri La Springs again this year will be in the picturesque courtyard behind the Inn. Chairs will be provided at both locations and there will be a cash bar available at the concert at Shangri-La.

The program entitled “Cheek to Cheek” features returning artists Tyler Putnam and Sarah Nordin who will perform selections from South Pacific, The King and I, Carmen, and popular songs. Sarah Nordin brings her talent as a dancer to “Cheek to Cheek” and the couple will perform several dance interludes.

This husband-and-wife team, who were GO Professional Artists in Residence for seasons 3 and 4, have been delighting audiences across the country with their concerts of opera arias mixed with classic musical theater selections. They met while working in a production of South Pacific and have been touring the country together ever since.

Praised by Opera News for the “clear beauty” of her voice and her “spot-on comic timing,” mezzo-soprano Sarah Nordin brings an exquisite blend of vocal artistry and strong dramatic instincts to a variety of repertoire across opera and concert stages. Ms. Nordin has been seen as the title role of Carmen with Missouri Symphony Orchestra, Livingston Symphony Orchestra, and Gulfshore Opera, Isabella in L’Italiana in Algeri with St. Petersburg Opera and Taconic Opera, and Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus with Opera Orlando and Opera Tampa. An accomplished Mozartean, Ms. Nordin has garnered critical acclaim for her interpretation of several of the composer’s most memorable roles. The St. Louis Post praised her “rich mezzo-soprano that fit Mozart’s music like a glove” and Ladue News called her singing “uniformly splendid.” Ms. Nordin has participated in several prestigious Young Artist programs, among them Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Central City Opera, Caramoor, Opera North, and Opera Orlando. She is also an award-winning ballroom dancer and an accomplished French Horn player.

Possessing a voice described as “robust and resonant” by Theatre Mania and deemed a “standout” by Opera Magazine, bass-baritone Tyler Putnam brings a combination of intelligent musicianship and spirited dramatic interpretation to a wide variety of repertoire across the United States. Tyler Puntam was seen as Colline in La bohème with Lakeland Opera and Gulfshore Opera, Zuniga in Carmen with Central City Opera, Banquo in Macbeth with Opera Tampa, and Sparafucile in Rigoletto with Gulfshore Opera. Mr. Putnam’s strong dramatic instincts have made him memorable in a variety of musical theatre and operetta roles. Luther Billis in South Pacific has become one of the bass’s signature characters, which he debuted at Opera North (NH) and reprised at St. Petersburg Opera (FL), garnering praise from BroadwayWorld.com: “In the key, clownish role of Luther Billis, Tyler Putnam was a hoot!” Mr. Putnam was scheduled to sing the role of The Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance with Opera Tampa before it was cancelled on opening night as a precaution due to COVID-19. That production has been rescheduled for 2021.

Gulfshore Opera is committed to keeping our patrons safe. Touchless check-in will be utilized, including mobile or electronic tickets. Masks are required for all indoor and outdoor locations. There will be limited and staggered seating to allow for social distancing. To reduce crowding, the concerts are one hour without intermission.
