When Bradley Davis, Goodland’s postal clerk, arrived at work last week, he discovered that the outdoor mailbox had been burglarized. There were no pry marks and it appeared that bolt cutters were used to cut off the padlock.
“It must have happened sometime [over the] weekend, most likely Sunday night,” Davis said. “You’d have to be crazy to steal from the U.S. Postal service,” he added. Indeed the two sections of the U.S. (Criminal) Code in play here call for fines and imprisonment up to eight years.
Postal Inspector Damien Kraebel advised that there is an ongoing investigation of several similar mailbox break-ins in Marco Island and Chokoloskee, in addition to the one in Goodland. Investigation has so far indicated that there is more than one person involved.
Any reader who put a check into the Goodland outdoor mailbox last weekend should keep a close watch on their bank account. If necessary, the U.S. Postal inspectors can be contacted at 877-876-2455.
