Age is no barrier for Corky Trebilcock and Tio Campanile when it comes to taking part in the sport they love.

They teamed up at the respective ages of 84 and 91 to take on any and all competitors in the men’s doubles portion of the 27th Love of the Y tennis tournament, the annual fundraiser for the Greater Marco Family YMCA.

Campanile was smiling, bit just a bit rueful, after they came away on the short end of a match, 6-2, 6-5.

“This was a tough match to lose,” he said. “They just outplayed us. We were fairly well matched, I thought. They just played the tough points better than we did. We made too many errors and they played steadily.”

Roberto Saad, the Marco Y’s tennis director, was pleased with the 2018 edition of the tournament.

“There were 74 players and for us, that’s a good number and we’re happy that we have the sponsors,” he said. “The participation of the players was great this year.”

Sponsors included Harbor Goldsmith, the Aladdin Companies, Affordable Landscaping,

The SpeakEasy, Julie and Brock Wilson and Darlene Roddy.

Trebilcock has been a regular participant in the Love of the Y.

“I play all kinds of tournaments and I do it because I love playing with people I’ve never played with before,” he said. “You play people that you don’t know and it’s just fun to come out and have the challenge of playing people who play differently.”

He also enjoys helping a facility where he can be found on the courts, five days a week.

“The Y is something that I think is a tremendous asset to this little island,” said Trebilcock. “I support the Y in many ways.”
