Fundraising Gala to Bring Help to Cancer Patients in Need Dealing with a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment is stressful enough without having to worry about how to pay for essentials such as rent or the electric bill. Patients suddenly discover that cancer not only strikes their body, but their family, friends, profession and their finances. Elaine Miller had to stop working when she was diagnosed with metastatic Stage 4 breast cancer. Although she had some money saved for emergencies and was covered by health insurance, she was soon having trouble paying her bills. That’s when she was referred to Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation, which provides financial assistance for non-medical bills
to qualified cancer patients so they can focus on battling their illness. “They helped me with my mortgage that month,” said Miller, “and put me in touch with three or four other groups that were able to help me as well. It took the pressure off.” Peter Spencer, an Army veteran who completed three tours of duty in Vietnam, found himself in a similar situation while being treated for Stage 3 cancer. “When the subject of finances came up I told them I was struggling and they referred me to the Foundation. They paid my rent for the month. It was a big help.” The Foundation assists qualified patients, like Miller and Spencer, with non-medical expenses, such as rent or mortgage, utility and telephone payments and car payments or car insurance. Donations from physicians and staff of Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) helped start the Foundation and continue to be essential, but its biennial
signature event is now a major funding source to help fulfill the ever-increasing patient grant applications.
The “Time to Remember” gala on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples will feature a LIVE performance by soul diva, music legend and the First Lady of Motown, Martha Reeves and The
Vandellas. The magical Motown-inspired evening includes cocktails, dinner, dancing and a live auction of unique items and experiences, including “Fund-a-Family” live bidding where proceeds will go directly
to support families of cancer patients. Founding Chair Jackie Bearse, together with Chair, Patty Baker, Co-chairs Kirsten Ferrara and Jean Hertzog and a committee of more than 20 volunteers have created an event that is both lighthearted and fun but with an underlying purpose that is both serious and meaningful.
“Since 2014 the Foundation has raised nearly $1.2 million in grants to fund the real and everyday needs of families,” said Bearse, who is also a FCS Foundation board member, “however, there is so much
more that needs to be done.”
Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) Foundation has seen its grant applications increase by nearly 20% in the past year. “It is imperative that we continue to assist every qualified cancer patient that applies
to the Foundation for help,” added Bearse.
Tickets to “Time to Remember” are $600 per person; underwriting and sponsorship opportunities are available by calling 941-677-7192 or online at Foundation.FLCancer.com/time/.
