The Friends of Tigertail organization has always received excellent community support for their quarterly beach clean-ups, and the Saturday April 10 event, in association with Collier County’s Bay Days/Keep Collier Beautiful, was no exception. There were 44 participants that collected 68 pounds of trash from the park, giving the area a much-needed sprucing. Participants included residents as well as visitors, young and old, families, students, and members of area environmentally focused organizations. Several Friends of Tigertail members, Citizens for a Better Marco, Rookery Bay, Hideaway Tax District, and MICA volunteered. Steve Pawlowski from the City of Marco Island, Melissa Hennig, Collier County Parks and Recreation Region 1 Beaches and Water Manager, and Nick Parziale, the new concessions manager at Tigertail Park all contributed their time and effort.
In the past year, recurrent clean-up events have gleaned less debris, but sadly, with beaches now more populated, that trend has reversed. The one positive note on Saturday was that there were fewer particularly harmful plastic straws and cigarette butts found. Tigertail is an extremely environmentally sensitive locale as many species of birds and other wildlife migrate, live, and nest there. Beach visitors are urged to pack out their own garbage and pick up any debris that they see on the beach. Not only is refuse unsightly for people, but it has direct negative impact on animals, as well as drawing predators.
The Friends of Tigertail group is most grateful for the support of the community in its efforts to preserve, protect, and promote the beauty of Tigertail Beach. For those wishing to further help the organization, The Winn Dixie on 625 North Collier Blvd has designated the group as the nonprofit recipient of funds from the community Bag Program in May 2021. A donation of $1.00 will be made to the group for every purchase of a $2.50 reusable community bag during the month of May, and the group appreciates any participation. The next Tigertail Beach clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, July 10, 2021, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
