“As the rigors of testing continue to become more demanding it’s delightful to have a reprieve from the monotonous testing schedule,” stated Jerra Minning, an 8th grade teacher at the Marco Island Charter Middle School.
This past month, the 8th grade students at Marco Island Charter Middle School (MICMS) participated in a writing competition sponsored by The Friends of Tigertail Beach, Inc., a non-profit organization that is solely funded by memberships and donations. Ken Kubat explained that the goal of Friends of Tigertail Beach, Inc. is to preserve, protect and enhance the treasure of Tigertail Beach, which is a stop on the Great Florida Birding Trail, in addition to being a dynamic estuarine ecosystem.
The 8th grade students were asked to write about preserving and protecting our local environment. The organization chose Lola Wesson as the winner of the contest and campership. Lola will enjoy a week of field trips, boat trips, and many hands-on learning experiences, all connected to the marine environment. As a Junior Naturalist she will discover how she can make a difference for the environment today, and in the future.
This campership opportunity was made possible by Keith Dameron and Iberia Bank. They selected Friends of Tigertail Beach, Inc. to be the beneficiary of funds collected at one of their shred parties. The Friends of Tigertail Beach Board of Directors then voted to provide the opportunity to the 8th grade students at Marco Island Charter Middle School.
Congratulations Lola Wesson and many thanks to Friends of Tigertail Beach, Inc., Mr. Kubat, Mr. Dameron and Iberia Bank for providing this opportunity to our students.
