On Sunday, January 13, as most of the country was shoveling snow, Marco Islanders headed to Mackle Park and made the most of the postcard-worthy, cloudless day. Sounds of Golden Oldies performed by Ferguson and Rogers could be heard all around the park as it buzzed with activity. Some parkgoers strolled around the walking track. Others played shuffleboard, bocci ball, or operated RC Boats; however, the majority congregated under and around the airnasium, finding their perfect spots in the shade, prepared with lawn chairs, blankets…and their dancing shoes. The Lely Trojan Marching Band provided baked goods, cool drinks, and novelty items available for purchase. “The Lely Trojan Marching Band Boosters will be providing an assortment of items for purchase every Sunday during the free concerts. We are working to raise money for music, uniforms, equipment, and travel,” explains Ava Ricigliano, Treasurer of the Lely Trojan Marching Band Boosters, Lely alum, and mother of Lely sophomore Pari Saxophone player, Mikayla Ricigliano. “The Lely Trojan Marching Band (106 members in all) recently performed at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. It’s necessary for us to continue to raise funds to support these kids. They work so hard, and I’m so proud of them!” “We just love coming to Marco Island on the weekend. We always check the paper for events as soon as we arrive. Last night, we attended the concert at Veterans Park. Today, we are here for yet another free concert,” remarks a beaming Susan Zig. The Winter Concert Series, now heading into its 3rd week, will continue entertaining islanders with free concerts through April 14. The Series boasts a full concert line-up set for every Sunday from 2-4 PM at Mackle Park, except for Super Bowl Sunday (February 3) when instead of a concert, Mackle Park will be hosting a Tail Gate Party.
