Frank Gervin Memorial Boxing Show

The Marco Island Boxing Club brought live USA sanctioned boxing to a ballroom in Southwest Florida. The show, held at the JW Marriott, was a sellout with all proceeds going to the Marco Island Boxing Club. The match featured boxers from Ireland, New Jersey and Florida, including several from Marco Island.

A line of fighters filed out behind bagpipe player just before Mary Jo Worley O’Regan went into the ring and sang the National Anthem. Steve Reynolds emceed the event. Ring girls were sponsored by Excel Fitness. Dr. Carlos Portu was the ringside physician.

There were variety of fights featuring different ages and weight classes, including a newly added ladies round. Screams of encouragement could be heard coming from spectators as their favorite boxers threw punches. Some seemed to be knowledgeable about the intricacies of boxing from their chairside vantage points, but there is little doubt the fighters heard. In the end, it was the Irish who took home the prized belt.

New this year was a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia, such as framed photos, signed posters and a baseball signed by Ted Williams.

A dinner and dance will be held Friday, February 2nd at San Marco Church Parish Hall, with Andy Cooney and his band performing. Contact Richie at 201-694- 2182 or Helen Donaghy at 239-595-1907 for tickets. Proceeds benefit the 501(c)(3) Marco Island Boxing Club.
