On October 18 and 19, meet Joe Simonelli, playwright and author of “Old Ringers” for a talk-back immediately following the show. Critics describe the play as a crowd-pleasing comedy masterpiece! Joe Simonelli has provided a timely take on how four senior women open a home phone sex service after receiving an unsolicited obscene phone call. This is an adult bawdy comedy that balances obscenity with drier subject like the shrinking economy and social security checks; so, the play is timely and believable with adult humor that is tastefully delivered.
When Diane (Kay Wylie-Jacob) finds her Social Security check drastically diminished, a wrong number to a sex hotline opens the door to an adventurous financial opportunity. Joined by her friends – the frisky Verna (Marie Prasek), the trepidatious Kathy Ann (Cindy Hile), and the sensible Rose (Jackie Weiner) – and her carefree boyfriend Harry (Ty Szumigala), Diane and the group must navigate worldly challenges and personal discoveries while maintaining their sense of humor and avoiding the judgmental gaze of Diane’s pious daughter Amanda (Alexandra Bates) and a roving Detective Rumson (Gregg Birr). The actors bring humanity and genuineness to the characters with guidance from director Alexandra Bates, who freshens the material a bit for the present era of technology, sex positivity, and elder visibility.
