Physicians Regional Healthcare System CEO Joe D. Pinion announced that the hospital is the first in southwest Florida to perform da Vinci TransOral Robotic Surgery (TORS), a surgical procedure to treat throat cancer. The surgery was successfully performed by Otolaryngologist Jay Roberts, M.D., chief of surgery at Physicians Regional.
“We are very pleased to expand our robotics program to an even broader base of patients,” said Pinion. “It’s truly a testament to the quality of physicians on staff at Physicians Regional; Dr. Roberts is a highly regarded surgeon and the people of our community are extremely fortunate to have him practicing here.”
With the TORS procedure, Dr. Roberts utilized the da Vinci®-S™ Surgical System at Physicians Regional to remove a cancerous tumor from the base of the patient’s tongue through the mouth with external no incisions. In contrast, traditional open surgery requires a surgeon to make a long incision through the chin, jaw and throat, and in some cases, divide the jawbone to gain access to the tumor.
“We can now offer patients with throat cancer a safe and effective minimally invasive procedure without the disfigurement, scarring and other traumatic aspects of traditional surgery,” said Dr. Roberts.
The da Vinci-S system has four robotic hands called EndoWrist instruments. While incredibly small, they can grasp things, and rotate a full 360 degrees. This allows the surgeon to make extremely precise movements. Each system also has a console, the surgeons’s driver seat, at which the robotic hands are controlled and images are viewed from a 3D camera. Overall, it provides the surgeon with superior vision, dexterity and improved access.
The benefits to patients with throat cancer can include: significantly less blood loss, fewer complications, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and return to normal speech and swallowing, and excellent cancer control.
Physicians Regional Healthcare System introduced the da Vinci-S system in early 2007. The program is being utilized in several areas of medicine, including bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, general surgery, gynecology, otolaryngology and urology.
